battle of the dirty bird

::calgary.alberta.canada.temp.-3ºC.humidity.63%.overcast::

fighting over greasy gulls. deep fried breaded goodness battling it out for top spot amongst gluttons. leave it to me to draw the war lines and find out once and for all which fried chicken is the best tasting on calgary streets. the competition is on: chicken on the way vs kfc vs mary browns. we all know that kfc's gravy kicks butt; chicken on the way has corn fritters; mary browns is the best in the east.

chicken on the way: breaded and overfried to perfection, this bird is the greasiest of the three. crunchy to the bite, the skin tastes like the bottom of a deep fryer. the key to enjoying this chicken is that the true flavor lies in the meat. bottom line: it's what's inside that counts. an aside, this is the only true local fare competing, as this brand has been serving calgarians since 1958.

kfc: tasty and flavorful, the colonel's secret recipe packs a mean one-two punch with their delicious coating of salt and spices. its like there is a party in your mouth and everybody is invited. however, thats where it stops. once you get past the skin, you end up with some pretty bland chicken. bottom line: skin + gravy = crazy delicious.

mary browns: hailing from the canadian east coast comes newcomer mary browns with their entry. mediocre chicken is their specialty, obviously designed to accompany a pint of alexander keiths. tasting more like bread than chicken, this one fails to impress. regardless, that didn't stop me from finishing it. bottom line: did i mention their world famous taters?

kfc is the clear winner in this battle, its no wonder they are the leading fried chicken franchise in the bird world. to create the ultimate meal you would have to gather the following: 3 pieces of skinless chicken on the way chicken, 3 pieces of kfc chicken skins, 1 large kfc gravy, 1 medium order of mary brown's taters, and 1 chicken on the way corn fritter.
